People who drink moderate amounts of alcohol have a lower body weight


Alcoholic beverages are packed with calories: a small glass of red wine has 85 calories, 12 oz. of beer has about 150 calories and a mixed drink can contain up to 200 calories. Unfortunately, liquid alcohol tends to be less filling than solid food, which led experts to previously believe that any alcohol consumption causes weight gain. Why has a recent study shown that those who drink small amounts regularly, such as one drink every day, have a lower body mass index (BMI) than those who consume the same amount of alcohol all in one day? The explanation is fairly simple. Scientists think that those who drink regularly are used to deriving energy from the alcohol's calorie content, while binge-drinkers tend to indulge in other ways during parties and other events, leading to over-snacking as well.
